Christmas & New Year 2017

Letter from the editor

It’s funny the things you remember from your childhood Christmases past. Like sneakily eating a chocolate out of your advent calendar a day early and hoping Mum wouldn’t notice – as if!

Every family has their own festive traditions. Ours was emptying out stockings on Christmas morning to discover some smaller treats – enough to keep us happy until lunchtime though – until all family members, grandparents etc. had arrived to share the joy of seeing the kids opening the big presents from Mr Claus. I’ve kept up this tradition with my kids and as each year passes we’ve added a few of our own, such as making a few new tree decorations to add to our huge collection and receiving a Christmas video message from Santa on Christmas Eve. Check out our favourite suggestions for making this Christmas even more magical.

One new tradition that’s really taken off like Rudolph from a rooftop in recent years is Santa asking for a bit of help creating his naughty and nice lists. He does this by enlisting the assistance of his elves to spy on kids and report back to him if there is a) any seriously bad behaviour, or b) exceptionally good deeds done. For Christmas 2017 though, with so many elves busy in the toy workshop, he’s taken a more direct approach in the form of a Santa Cam which lets him see directly into a child’s home from the North Pole. Find out what local parents think of the idea.

What other fabulous festive treats do we have inside? Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain has some seriously sweet ideas the entire family will love. I adored reading Kerry Thomson’s letter to Dear Nick (you will too I promise) and why not take some time out from all the shopping to relax with the kids and make a magical snow globe?

It’s been another amazing year full of memories and I hope yours were special.
On behalf of the entire Ni4kids team, we wish you a wonderful Christmas, a Happy New Year and see you 2018.
