Belfast counts down to Paralympic Games

The countdown to the London 2012 Games continues and today (Monday May 21) marks another important milestone as Belfast celebrates ‘100 Days To Go’ until the Paralympic Games.

From August 29 – 9 September, Belfast City Hall’s ‘big screen’ will be showing eight hours of daily coverage of the Paralympic Games and members of the public are being invited to come along to the Live Sites around the UK to cheer on Britain’s largest ever team, as well as athletes from around the world.

Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor Niall Ó Donnghaile said it was great to see so many people excited about a spectacular summer of sport.

He said: “The Olympics, and later in the year the Paralympics, never fail to be inspirational and remind us that with hard work, commitment and dedication, you can achieve your goal – whether that be in sport or in your daily life. This summer will see a spectacular showcase of sport with drama, passion and emotion as ParalympicsGB look to repeat their performance in the Beijing Games in 2008 when they brought home a total of 102 medals – 42 of which were gold.

“During the Games the London 2012 Belfast Live Site will be the destination to see all of the biggest Paralympic moments play out and enjoy the superb sporting action as it unfolds. It’s great to have the big screen here in the heart of the city so that people can congregate and be part of it.”

Pupils from across Belfast were at City Hall today to take part in a number of sporting activities including boccia and hurling.
