June 2016

School will soon be out for the summer providing the perfect opportunity to keep the kids busy learning some new skills, or pursuing an activity they love, with an action-packed summer scheme!

Every parent wants their child to have an enjoyable break away from the classroom and a positive summer scheme experience offers many benefits for self- development such as making new friends, gaining confidence and a sense of self-achievement from trying out something new, and that all important sense of independence. Of course with such a wide selection available it’s important to make sure that you choose a scheme that is right for your child. Age, personality and experience will be big factors in your decision.

Most camps are run by seasoned professionals with many years’ experience, but do ask them some of the questions that we have listed here to make sure you and your child are happy and that you know exactly what to expect. Location is another aspect to consider. You might want to think about the time it would take to get there in the case of an emergency or how the drop-off and pick up will affect your normal daily routine. Other aspects that you might wish to consider and discuss with the supervisors are what you would like your child to gain from the experience and take the opportunity to highlight any special interests that your child may want to explore so that they get the most from their time there.

So if you want to avoid the dreaded summer holiday lament of ‘I’m bored’. Take a look here at what’s on offer for a sensational summer 2016...

•If I am late to collect my child will they still be supervised and is there a late collection charge?

Summer Scheme Workshops:

7s and under: Build it: Chalk-A-Block!
Little ones will draw, build and create their own city in this fun and creative workshop aimed at bringing out the mini architect in all of us. After first learning about cities and how buildings are made our little engineers will then chalk up their own buildings on large blackboard-style blocks which they’ll use to construct a cityscape of their own design. To finish, they can stand among their buildings for a fun and unique photo opportunity.

For 8s and over: Build it: Dream Team!
It’s all about constructing the best team in this fun and highly interactive workshop. We’ll set your group a range of exciting team building games and challenges that will test their ingenuity and cooperation. But be warned: they’ll have to think inside and outside the box if they want to be named the ultimate Dream Team. Working together has never been more fun!

Over 8s (aged 9+): Build it Extreme: The Dome!
This is a unique construction challenge that will test your group’s building and teamwork skills to the max. We’ll give them just one hour to make a giant geodesic dome from specially designed plastic tubing. Can they work out the pattern and create the shape? Will your team make it in time and if they do, will they all fit inside? Believe it, geometry has never been more fun and hands-on than this!

What a summer we have in store for 2016 with two major events for lovers of sport – the Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, and the Paul Acheson Summer Sports Weeks at Campbell College in Belfast. The modern Olympics started in Athens in 1896, less than 100 years later – in 1993 – Paul Acheson launched his first summer camp.

This summer they have four courses available in the extensive grounds of Campbell College. For youngsters aged 7 to 14 there is the chance to participate in a range of sports all day; these include swimming, football, rounders, basketball, kwik cricket to name a few. Other boys and girls aged 7-14 can try the art/drama/sports programme which is always very popular.

Younger participants have plenty to keep them happy too. The Superkids aged 5 to 6 spend an active day with both indoor and outdoor sports, including a swim each day, plus parachute games, art and crafts, indoor games and lots more. Children aged 4 find that their Super 4s programme is much the same as the Superkids but at a much slower pace!

All courses are available from Monday to Friday, 9.30am – 4.00pm. This summer’s dates are the weeks beginning July 4, 18, 25 and August 1, 8, 15. Offering even more flexibility for families, parents do not have to book an entire week, organisers simply ask for a booking of five days spread over the 30 available.

Summer drama activity holidays offers young people ages 8 to 18 a stimulating, fun holiday as they sing, dance, film, and act their way – in a company of new-found friends – (some from overseas) – towards an end-of-week show for parents and friends.

“We have been running for over thirty years,”says Artistic Director Roma Tomelty “We're in The Daily Telegraph Magazine's, 'One of nine of the best residential summer camps that stand out from the crowd’, and the (UK) Independent Magazine's ‘The Ten Best: Creative outings for children.’”
Summer drama takes place in Garron Tower, in the glorious Glens of Antrim and is residential and non-residential in July and August.Drama helps communication and confidence – but they never forget it's a holiday!

Debutots and Debutkids Fun Weeks will provide an exciting, challenging, rewarding and fun way for children aged 4 to 12 years to spend their summer holidays. It is a place for making new friends, building confidence and having a fantastic time in a safe, friendly and dynamic atmosphere where even the most timid child will feel able to join in.

For 4 to 7-year-olds the theme is ‘Funky Fish Tales’ and for the older group aged 8 to 12 the theme is ‘ The Lion King’. There are fun weeks in Antrim, Lisburn, Hillsborough, Belfast , Crossgar and Bangor.

Each session has four elements. There is a gentle performance class with songs, dances and drama games. Next is craft time where the children create all sorts of wonderful things –
lots of glue, glitter and colour! After snack time children enjoy some indoor or outdoor games depending on the weather (all outdoor activities are within grounds of the venue). And then there is the show, which is put on for family and friends at the very end of the week, usually based on a children's classic tale but given Debutots special flavour.

But the show is just a small part of a week bursting with energy, fun and friendship. Early booking is advised as spaces for each session are limited. The cost is £52 per child with discounts available for siblings and multi week bookings. Please contact
