Spring 2016

As summer collections prepare to spring onto the Belfast FASHIONWEEK catwalk, director Cathy Martin talks us through the hottest trends for your tots this season, as well as her top picks to keep you as super stylish as them...

More often than I care to think about, I find myself rummaging through my daughter Valentina’s wardrobe mixing and matching the cutest little outfits. With a wardrobe that’s full of coats, drawers brimming with every colour of tops, dresses, skirts and leggings – and a shoe collection that even I envy – I get lost in a little girl doll-dressing fantasy all the time.

Personally I’m a lover of colour for children, so I was delighted to see the colour blocking trend come to the fore this season again. Expect to see lots of vibrant colours mixed with fun and fresh prints, think frills and florals for your princess, with pretty pinks and zesty lemons as your colour palette. These adorable pale pink floral pumps from Ted Baker at Debenhams, CastleCourt are perfect when paired with a summer dress for fancier occasions or, alternatively, with a bright tee and denim shorts for when the warmer weather (hopefully) hits.

Speaking of denim, it’s also a massive trend for the season and one that suits the whole family, so think double denim when splurging out on your family’s summer wardrobe. A wee bit of matchy-matchy never hurt anyone… And surely I’m not the only one who loves to match up the family for a day out? This curved hem tie detail dress from Warehouse is an ideal choice for any time-poor mum. Bang-on trend and effortlessly chic, it’s perfect for play dates and works well when teamed with a practical fashionable flat.

When it comes to your little man, colour and prints are ideal but why not mix it up with a seasonal stripe, for something a little different? Stripes are always popping in and out of fashion, but I absolutely love what the high street has to offer this season. Next has some great pieces, like this red and white stripe Breton polo, a steal at £7, and the Chipmunks stripe shoe from Debenhams with its cute skull stitching, is sure to be a big hit with any wannabe pirate. Remember fashion for kids should be fun for you and them!

Often forgotten about, let’s talk about Daddy and to how keep his style up with the rest of the family’s fashion. Men tend to shy away from bright and bold colours, but as the brighter nights approach it’s time to lighten up their wardrobe. Stark whites and subtle greys are perfect colours to inject a little life into a dull dress sense, and if your man is feeling extra adventurous, opt for bright stitching or contrasting colour detail. This Superdry check shirt from DV8 fashion is a real stand-out piece with the gorgeous orange and blue check detail and perfect when paired with a light grey chino and a white plimsoll. It’s summer chic at its finest!

If you’re in need of further inspiration then the High Street Heaven show, on Friday March 11, at Belfast FASHIONWEEK is the place to be, with all of the latest family fashions from Alana Lifestyle, Cari’s Closet, DV8, Next, Remus Uomo, Warehouse, as well as Designers at Debenhams, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge and Blue Inc amongst many others. The show on Saturday March 12 will feature Victoria Square plus the ‘Fifty over Fifty’ mini show for those who are fifty-plus! Tickets are available now from belfastfashionweek.com or from Visit Belfast: Tel: 028 9024 6609.
