Young People

Belfast-based performing arts school, The Rainbow Factory at YouthAction Northern Ireland, is gearing up for this year’s summer musical, Bugsy Malone, as they welcome a visit from Lord Mayor, Nuala McAllister, who’s a strong advocate for youth development

The sold-out production, which runs from 14-19 August, is entirely youth-led with over 40 young people taking part in various roles to bring the high quality theatre production to the stage; from music and acting to front of house and lighting.

The Rainbow Factory, now in its 23rd year, is run by YouthAction Northern Ireland and offers 22 weekly classes across its bases in Belfast and Banbridge. With over 300 attendees each week there is an initiative for everyone who has an interest in the industry.

Maire Campbell, Artistic Director at YouthAction Northern Ireland, said: “We are so proud of all our young people and the hard work they have put in to create such a fantastic show.

“At the Rainbow Factory we offer young people the opportunity to get involved in lots of creative industry initiatives, such as musical theatre classes, front of house hospitality and gig nights, which will equip them with the skills to pursue their passions. With a new term beginning in September we really encourage anyone who has an interest to get in touch - there is something for everyone, regardless of their background or ability.”

Lord Mayor Nuala McAllister, who visited The Rainbow Factory during rehearsals, is backing the work of YouthAction: “It’s so encouraging to see these young people using their talents and taking an interest in the performing arts. The creative industry is so important to the economy of Northern Ireland and we’ve seen some really talented and influential performers hail from here. I have no doubt that with the training provided by YouthAction Northern Ireland, these young people are set to go far.”
