Fostering – it’s all about stickability
‘Do you have stickability?’
That was the question that Avery Bowser, children’s services manager at Action for Children asked when we spoke to him about fostering.
Avery told Ni4kids of the urgent need for foster families across Northern Ireland: ‘This year alone around 200 new families are needed. We need ordinary people from all walks of life who have the ability to do something special for children in desperate need of a home.’
A lack of foster families can mean children being placed a long way from home – ‘which results in children losing touch with family and community. It can make it harder to return children home and for those who stay in care it has a negative effect on long-term outcomes.’
Avery explained what is needed to be a foster parent.
‘You need a spare room in your home, warmth and understanding, patience and flexibility. We will provide you with training and support. But the clearest message is from our children. They say that the most important thing is having someone who will stick by them’
Avery added: ‘If you are interested in becoming a foster carer or would like to find out more, please contact Action for Children’s fostering team on Tel: 028 9046 0500 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.’
