On 15 – 17 August 2018 junior golfers from across Northern Ireland and beyond will tee off at a new golf competition, the Newry, Mourne and Down Junior Summer Golf Trophy. The competition is designed to provide junior golfers, both boys and girls of all ages and abilities, with outstanding opportunities to experience the world of golf. There will be great competitions, on wonderful courses, at top class venues with the aim to develop junior golf. The junior golfers will play Kilkeel and Warrenpoint Golf Clubs, with the opportunity to qualify to play Royal County Down which is currently ranked as the number one course in the world by Golf Digest.

This exciting initiative has been organised by Newry, Mourne & Down District Council in conjunction with the Golfing Union of Ireland (Ulster Branch), Irish Ladies Golfing Union Ltd (Northern District) Royal County Down, Warrenpoint and Kilkeel Golf Clubs.

This competition is open to all golfers both boys and girls under 18 years of age. In addition to the overall competition prizes will be awarded in three age categories, under 18, under 16 and under 14.

Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Councillor Mark Murnin expressed “Newry, Mourne and Down District Council are supportive of the development of junior golf and golf tourism in Northern Ireland”.

He continued saying: “The Newry, Mourne and Down Junior Summer Trophy is an exciting new golf tournament that will be competitive, challenging and fun for junior golf and will aim to help every child enjoy the sport. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the Newry, Mourne and Down region and to attract junior golfers from the island of Ireland and beyond.  Newry, Mourne and Down District Council hope to see this junior golfing event established as an annual event.”

Chairman of the GUI (Ulster Branch) John White advised that ”The Golfing Union of Ireland (Ulster Branch) is delighted to be associated with Newry Mourne & Down District Council’s new golf competition “Junior Golf Summer Trophy”. This competition is an excellent stepping stone between those taking up the game and those that have reached an elite standard, in all age categories, who play in the various GUI/Ulster Branch Championships across the country.

He continued: “The attraction for families is especially welcomed, with the competitions at Kilkeel/ and Warrenpoint supplemented by a Flag competition, for those not able to play in the Summer Trophy itself.  We wish all competitors and their family and friends an enjoyable few days in this very picturesque part of the country.”
