Quentin Blake; John Burningham; Adam Hargreaves; Shirley Hughes; Helen Oxenbury; Chris Riddell; Posy Simmonds; Andy Stanton and Ed Vere, have all paid homage to Raymond Briggs by drawing The Snowman in their own iconic style.  The resulting artworks with accompanying quotes and messages are poignant and surprising and together form a fitting tribute to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Raymond’s classic picture book.

The Snowman was created and illustrated by Raymond Briggs as a picture book in 1978.  Narrated entirely through hand-drawn illustrations, the book tells the magical story of a boy whose snowman comes to life.  It perfectly captures the wonder and innocence of childhood and has become an intrinsic part of family Christmas, loved by generations of children.

“I was very happy to be invited to take part in the celebration as I am a longstanding admirer of Raymond Briggs and his work.”
Quentin Blake

“The Snowman is a sublime piece of visual storytelling that has entered the imaginations of generations of children.  I was very lucky to be taught by Raymond Briggs and have boasted about this fact for many years.  The Snowman was a huge influence on me as an illustrator as was the insight and encouragement of the man who made him.”
Chris Riddell

The original, signed artworks will be on display as part of a wider exhibition of Raymond Briggs’ original illustrations from The Snowman at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery from 4 December – 6 January.  They will be auctioned online to raise money for Raymond’s charity of choice, Chestnut Tree House.  The children’s charity provide hospice care services and community support for children and young people with progressive life-shortening conditions throughout East and West Sussex, Brighton and Hove and South East Hampshire. For the chance to own one of these stunning original artworks, place a bid via the online auction here: www.fundraising.bid/mysnowman  The auction will close on Sunday January 6, 2019 at 10pm.
