Education Minister Paul Givan has officially launched the Outdoor Learning Project to enhance pupil experiences of outdoor learning.
The project represents a £4million capital investment for pre-schools, nursery schools, primary schools and special schools to buy outdoor furniture and equipment they need most to enhance high-quality outdoor learning.
Paul Givan said: “As adults, when we think back to our own memories of childhood, we can all recall the joy of playing outdoors. The Outdoor Learning Project will enable schools to increase outdoor learning opportunities for children across Northern Ireland.
“The importance of outdoor play for children’s development cannot be overestimated. It helps children learn skills, develop physical strength and has significant mental health and educational benefits. I want to support pupils to increase their motivation, collaboration and confidence through well-structured outdoor play experiences.”
The Outdoor Learning Project forms part of the Minister’s Curriculum-led Capital Programme.
The Minister continued: “Extending learning beyond a traditional classroom brings many benefits and this funding will allow schools to improve their outdoor learning spaces and provide stimulating new play equipment.”
Last week, the Department wrote to pre-schools, nursery schools, primary schools and special schools providing funding allocations from the Outdoor Learning Project and guidance for placing orders.
