Education Authority Recruitment Initiative To Give Schools Faster Access To Classroom Support For SEN Pupils

The Education Authority (EA) has launched a recruitment drive for classroom assistants aimed at helping schools fill vacancies more quickly to ensure children get the right support from the right people, at the right time and in the right place.

Initially operating in the Belfast, Newtownabbey and Antrim areas, the pilot will be open to schools to participate which will reduce recruitment timeframes by approximately four weeks. Schools participating in the pilot will access a pool of candidates within their area, who have already submitted an application form setting out their qualifications and/or experience for the Classroom Assistant role, and will have full control over final decisions.

The pilot scheme addresses feedback from both school leaders and candidates regarding the challenges in filling Classroom Assistant vacancies.

Matthew Mc Dermott Assistant Director of Human Resources said: “With over 1,300 additional specialist provision places created for September 2025, EA recognises the importance of supporting schools to ensure they have adequate staffing which is crucial for delivering quality education for our children and young people with SEN.

“Potential candidates can apply through a simplified process that recognises diverse experience, from formal qualifications to practical childcare skills. The Education Authority will match candidates to schools, based on location and employment preferences, availability and specific experience requirements.

“The initiative will match applications to schools and enhance the support available for children and young people who depend on classroom assistants for curriculum access, personal care and behavioural support. These vital roles help create inclusive learning environments where all pupils can thrive academically and socially.”

Applications are now open, with information available at https://www.eani.org.uk/jobs/featured-jobs. The pilot will run throughout the 2025-26 academic year, with evaluation informing potential expansion to other areas.
