Winter Wonders at WWT Castle Espie: Experience the Magic of the Season While Supporting Wetland Conservation

This winter, WWT Castle Espie offers more than just a stunning winter wildlife experience. With festive activities, wildlife encounters, and opportunities to support conservation, the reserve is the perfect place to celebrate the season and connect with nature. From Papa Elf’s final holiday visit to relaxing Sound Spa sessions, WWT Castle Espie is a place to make cherished memories – as well as make a difference.

This December, WWT Castle Espie welcomes Papa Elf for one last time! The beloved holiday character will host a festive story time, filled with laughs and holiday cheer, for families to enjoy. From 4th to 19th December (Thursdays and Fridays only) and Saturday and Sunday 20th and 21st December at 4pm, join Papa Elf for a delightful, interactive session that’s bound to create lasting memories. After the story, stay for a Q&A where you can ask all things Christmas. The experience is free, with the option to make a donation to Papa Elf’s charity for wayward elves. It’s a joyful and light-hearted way to kick off your holiday season.

The holiday season can be hectic, so why not take a moment to unwind? On 7th December, WWT Castle Espie offers a Sound Spa Drop-in Session, a soothing experience led by Tessa Ann. This calming event invites you to immerse yourself in the tranquil sounds of nature and sound therapy. Set in the peaceful Graffan Room beside the Sensory Garden, it’s an ideal way to recharge and find some calm amidst the hustle and bustle of the season.

Winter is an incredible time to visit WWT Castle Espie for birdwatching. From December to January, the reserve is a haven for winter wildlife. Watch as flocks of Knot and Dunlin move with the tide, Eider ducks glide over the water, and Curlew forage along the mudflats. The reserve also hosts occasional visitors like Redwing and Fieldfare, making this a prime time for wildlife lovers to see nature in action. These stunning sights are a reminder of the importance of wetland habitats, which WWT Castle Espie works tirelessly to protect and restore.
