As children’s skin is more sensitive to UV rays than adults’, the Public Health Agency (PHA) and Cancer Focus NI are sharing top tips on getting the best from your sunscreen and protecting your child’s skin from cancer.
Make sure you choose a sunscreen that gives protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Choose a sunscreen that has a high SPF, at least 30 but 50 is better. Make sure it has a UVA rating of 4 or 5 stars or displays the EU logo for UVA protection. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before you go outdoors and reapply at least every 2 hours, or more frequently if exposed to water.
You should also:
· Keep babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight.
· Try to keep children in the shade, especially between 11am – 3pm.
· Choose clothes that cover children’s arms, legs and neck. Look for loose, closely woven materials.
· Make sure they wear a wide-brimmed sun hat.
· Make sure they wear sunglasses that have CE or EN Standard Marks, which carry a UV 400 label and offer 100% UV protection.
This will ensure they provide adequate protection from both UVA and UVB.
