NORTHERN IRELAND’S LONGEST-RUNNING COMMUNITY FESTIVAL RETURNS TO PORTAFERRY

Recognised as Northern Ireland’s longest running community festival the Portaferry Gala Festival returns from 18th–24th July 2026, bringing seven days of family fun, entertainment, community pride and celebration to the shores of Strangford Lough.

Now entering its 59th year, with a landmark 60th Anniversary celebration planned for 2027, the Portaferry Gala Festival remains the flagship event in the town’s calendar and one of the most established community festivals anywhere in Northern Ireland.

For almost six decades, the festival has brought generations together, creating cherished memories while celebrating the people, heritage and spirit of Portaferry. What began as a local community initiative has grown into a weeklong celebration attracting visitors from across Northern Ireland and beyond.

Supported through Ards and North Down Borough Council Festival Funding, alongside sponsorship, fundraising, local businesses other collaboration and support is from the emergency services, clubs, pubs, community organisations and a dedicated team of volunteers, the Gala continues to thrive through the collective efforts of the entire community.

While Portaferry continues to expand its wider Festivals of Portaferry Programme including the recently completed Portaferry Plein Air Festival the Narrows Regatta Series, Sails & Sounds Maritime Heritage, Shanty and Ulster-Scots Festival, the Joseph Tomelty Festival and a range of community led events, it is the Portaferry Gala Festival that remains the cornerstone of the town’s festival calendar.

Festival organisers said: “The Gala Festival belongs to the people of Portaferry. It is a celebration of community, friendship, volunteerism and local pride. As Northern Ireland’s longest running community festival, we are proud of our history and excited about our future as we look ahead to celebrating 60 years in 2027.”

The festival begins on Saturday 18th July with the ever popular Tractor Run, followed by the hugely anticipated Party in the Park. At just £3 per person, with children under three going free, families can enjoy an afternoon packed with activities including a climbing tower, archery, inflatables, giant games, children’s crafts, food vendors and entertainment for all ages.

Sunday’s Gala at the Shore brings a World Cup inspired celebration to the waterfront, featuring football challenges, water games, children’s activities, a gaming bus, crafts and family fun throughout the day. Returning favourites include the legendary Duck Derby and the infamous Paper Boat Race, before the evening’s popular Car Treasure Hunt.

The week continues with the Bonny Baby Competition, Kids Talent Show, Pure Blarney, Gala Fair Day, the prestigious Portaferry 10 Mile Road Race, family entertainment at St Patrick’s GAC, the launch of Darts Madness, rural community celebrations, horse rides, petting farms, traditional competitions and much more.

The festival culminates on Friday with the colourful Fancy Dress Parade, followed by this year’s exciting new musical finale:

THE GALA FLEADH

Inspired by the spirit of the All-Ireland Fleadh, Portaferry presents its own celebration of music, culture and community. Featuring outstanding live music, local performers and special guests including fabulous bands Cap O’Wall and the event promises a spectacular conclusion to festival week.

Organisers are also hopeful of welcoming carnival performers, samba drummers, giant puppets and additional street entertainment to add even more colour and excitement to the celebrations.

The festival continues to provide significant benefits for local businesses, accommodation providers, community groups and tourism, while strengthening community connections and showcasing everything that makes Portaferry unique.
